Tattoo Styles Guide

Fine Line Tattoos

A fine line tattoo is a subtle, delicate, and thin tattoo created with very thin and precise tattoo needles. When it comes to appearance, fine line tattoos are often softer in shading as well as more delicate in their linework than other types of tattoos. When considering fine line, it is important to go with an artist that specializes is this style, as it can be very technically demanding to perfect with very little room for error.

Traditional Tattoos

American Traditional tattoos are renowned for their bold black lines and vibrant colors. Predominantly, the palette includes primary colors, with a lot of reds, yellows, and blues. The colors are packed in areas while leaving some negative spaces for breathing room. Traditional tattoos do not incorporate color blends on many secondary/tertiary colors. This style is known for its iconic motifs such as sacred hearts, clipper ships, pin-up girls. tigers, skulls, roses, etc.

Neo-Traditional Tattoos

Neo Traditional tattoos draw inspiration from the Traditional tattoo style but have several variations. This style tends to have more complex color palettes and greater variations in line weight. They also incorporate fluid color blends and constitute a more diverse subject matter. It's common to see plants, animals, bugs, butterflies, women's faces and other objects in this modernized variation of traditional tattoos.

Realism Tattoos

Realism tattoos aim to replicate photographs or images with intricate detail. They are usually comprised of diluted shades of black in to create volume and depth and usually avoid any lifework altogether. These tattoos require a skilled artist who can capture every nuance and shading to create a lifelike representation on the skin. From portraits of loved ones to realistic depictions of animals or objects, realism tattoos showcase the artist’s ability to bring a picture to life.

Color Realism Tattoos

Color realism tattoos are all about replicating an image to look like a real-life, full-color photo. The style incorporates intricate color blends and high contrast to create the illusion of depth. Shading techniques and the use of highlights can also be used to create texture and give the tattoo longevity by increasing dynamic range and providing structure. This style is not just about using colors, but rather about using the right color combinations and blending techniques to make the tattoo look as realistic as possible.

Micro-Realism Tattoos

Micro-realistic tattoos are the smallest of all tattoo styles. They are incredibly small in size, hence the name micro. However, despite their size, they can be extremely detailed and require an incredible amount of precision, skill and experience to be done correctly. The instrumentation needed for micro tattoos are among the most difficult tools to master, so it's always best to find an artist that specializes in this style. While often criticized for their longevity, when done correctly these tattoos can last as long as any other style. Touch-ups can be done over time to bring their vibrancy back as by nature they have less saturation than other styles to prevent excessive blurring as they age.

Surrealism Tattoos

Surrealism tattoos use a combination of realism techniques and styles to experiment with irrational juxtapositions, optical illusions, mixed-media designs, and non-standard forms. The style is representative of irrational imagery that mixes fact and fantasy into what can usually be described as a bizarre dream. It is not uncommon for surrealism tattoo designs to contain hidden meanings and symbolism, adding to the intrigue and message. The results are often strange impressive paradoxical tattoos. As this style is more reliant on the message of contrasting realities rather than specific techniques, almost any style of tattooing can be used to achieve a surrealistic tattoo.

Watercolor Tattoos

Watercolor tattoos mimic the appearance of watercolor paintings with vibrant colors and abstract shapes. This style is characterized by its lack of black outlines, giving it a more fluid and ethereal look. Watercolor tattoos are popular among those seeking a more artistic and painterly approach to body art. They also tend to have a "wet" look achieved by smooth blends and variations in opacity. This style can also be mixed with other styles for a mixed media look.

Dotwork Tattoos

Dotwork tattoos have gained popularity in recent years for their intricate and mesmerizing designs. This style utilizes small dots and often symmetrical shapes to create stunning visual effects, ranging from mandalas to abstract pointillism pieces. They can be done with black or diluted blacks to achieve more depth and a more layered look. They can be done as single pieces or designed to adorn and accentuate large areas of the body. Dotwork tattoos require precision and patience on the part of the tattoo artist but result in truly stunning works of art.

Blackwork Tattoos

Blackwork tattoos are known for their depth and bold presence, particularly for using large amounts of pure black ink in place of shading or gradients. These tattoos can range from minimalistic to intricate and complex designs. Other styles such as tribal, dark art, illustrative, graphic, dotwork, etching and even lettering or calligraphic script can fall under the blackwork tattoo umbrella as long as only fully pigmented black ink is used. They also include blackout tattoos and any tattoo with pure black fill.

Anime Tattoos

As the name suggests, the Anime tattoos are a Japanese style of tattoos inspired by anime movies, shows, and comics. They often boast rich, defined lines, sharp angles and exaggerated features. They are very popular all around the world as this style has a very loyal fanbase across television and print. They are a form of cartoon illustrations that often tell the stories of epic journeys and fantasy-like characters.

Trash Polka Tattoos

Trash Polka is a tattoo style that mixes blackwork, realism, and "trash". This tattoo style is usually only black and red but, although not very common, can use other colors as well depending on the tattoo. Its style is very representative of the grunge aesthetic and can include a combination of stylized images, bold outlines, text, repeating patterns, negative spaces well as paint, drip or splatter textures. The Trash Polka tattoo style has gained more popularity recently for its ability to mix these elements and create amazing and dynamic works of art.

Geometry Tattoos

Geometric tattoos incorporate intricate shapes and patterns into their designs. These tattoos can range from simple geometric shapes like triangles or squares to repeated or complex patterns that create optical illusions on the skin. These designs often require an experienced tattoo artist who specializes in this particular style in order to conform the shapes to the body. The amount of patience and precision needed for these tattoos is extraordinary, so choose your artist wisely. By nature, the style requires a lot of pre-planning and sometimes piecing together of many stencils in order to effectively align and seamlessly connected the design around the body's contours.

Tribal Tattoos

Tribal tattoos draw inspiration from indigenous cultures worldwide and typically feature bold black lines and geometric patterns. These designs pay homage to ancient traditions and symbolize strength, courage, and connection to one’s roots. Whether it’s Maori-inspired tribal tattoos from New Zealand or Polynesian motifs from the Pacific Islands, each tribal tattoo carries its own unique meaning.

New School Tattoos

New School tattoos are known for their bold outlines, vibrant colors, and use of detailing and shading to create depth and a 3D effect. New School tattoos tend to feature cartoon-style designs inspired by media, with very exaggerated and distorted characteristics. This styles borrows elements from both Traditional and Neo-Traditional styles but add a dynamic twist of pop culture to their cartoon-like subjects.

Ornamental Tattoos

Ornamental tattoos tend to be decorative pieces involving flowing patterns, lines, dots, shapes and repetitive motifs. They often take their inspiration from the ancient arts as well as Buddhist, Polynesian and Celtic cultures. Ornamental designs can be bold and cover large areas such as the back or stomach or can be dainty and done using fine lines for a more elegant look. This fine line version is usually designed for areas of the body to imitate jewelry. Common areas include the wrists, fingers, chest and collarbone, ankles and other areas that can fit dainty, usually symmetrical patterns and designs.

Patchwork Tattoos

Patchwork tattoos aren't a single tattoo, but rather a collection of small tattoos arranged on the body to represent a "patchwork" of images or text. They can be done in almost any tattoo style, but they are usually done in fine line to allow enough space to separate each element and keep the minimalistic aesthetic they are known for. They are a great way to tell a story or document separate experiences without having to commit to a large area or potentially painful tattoo session. They are also a great introduction into the tattoo world if you are looking to get your first tattoo.

Ignorant Tattoos

The ignorant tattoo style is a fairly new tattoo style that has popped up in the last few years. You can identify an ignorant style tattoo by their intentionally careless, simplistic nature, making them look like a child's drawing or doodle. They are usually mostly line work and have a wonky. amateur look to them. Despite the rough nature of this style, it is important to not confuse a bad tattoo style for a badly executed tattoo. Although this style intentionally glorifies imperfections, the actual tattoo and technique should still meet professional tattoo standards.
